I've been here one week, so I thought I'd do an update on the work that me and the other interns have done so far. First, we go to the rooms where the younger babies are- there are 2 rooms for babies and one room for toddlers. There are about 10 babies in each of these rooms. Each of the rooms have many "aiyi" which in Chinese means "aunt" who take care of the babies. They are Chinese women who have been trained on baby care by China Care. There are usually about 5 of them in each room at any time and they all do 8 hour shifts so that all 24 hours are covered. As interns we can go into the rooms and help out and play with the babies.
We've also been working on a new building for China Care. They are planning to move the above-mentioned rooms into a brand new building, and we are helping to get it ready. We have dusted and painted and we still need to clean the floors. It's about a ten minute drive from where we are living/working, and its very interesting to drive through this part of the city - twice we have seen sheep crossing the 4 lane road ;) and yes, the drivers honk ecstatically at the sheep.
Our third project right now is to organize and document China Care's warehouse where they are storing clothes and toy donations. We spent all yesterday afternoon sorting and planning.
The fourth project that me and a few other of the interns have been doing is three-day-a-week preschool. I volunteered to plan out the lessons for the kids. We have 8 pre-schoolers, and we do coloring, and play dough, building blocks. We also sing a song about a "chu-chu" (train) that they love!
So thats the basic rundown of what I've been doing this last week!
